Ideas for new stories can come in unexpected ways. They
can also take you to unexpected places. One afternoon I noticed tiny
spiderlings ballooning or sailing on the wind. I was fascinated by
their journey which I later learned can last for hundreds of miles.
That one moment in the garden led me to explore the many unique
and surprising ways babies can move from place to place. As I did
my research, I was constantly and deliciously amazed by what I learned.
A newborn kangaroo or "joey" is so tiny; it can fit into a teaspoon.
When baby loons are tired or cold, they hop on their parent's back
for a warm ride home, but piggybacking also protects the chicks from
snapping turtles, large hungry fish, and hawks.
The decision to pair
full-color photographs of the ten baby animals with illustrations
of human babies and their parents was the inspired decision of the
editor and art director at NorthWord. When the finished book arrived,
I was thrilled to see what all of us - author, illustrator, photographers,
editor and art director - had created together. |
